‘CONNECT NY–Beyond PTSD: Veterans, Mental Health & Society’
May 13 at 9 p.m. on WCNY-TV
Veterans returning from combat have to fight for mental health services and against the stigma it carries. Now they are in the crosshairs of the debate over so-called Red Flag gun laws. How can we balance providing both male and female veterans with the services they need, and ensure they’re treated fairly when they return home?
Panelists:
• Derek Coy, Veterans’ Health Officer of the NYS Health Foundation
• Melissa Spicer, Co-founder of Clear Path for Veterans
• Dr. Tanya S. Bowen is a licensed clinical psychologist at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. Dr. Bowen works as the Behavioral Health Consultant for Team Red, the Women’s Health Clinic and as the LGBT Veteran’s Care Coordinator. In these capacities, she provides brief behavioral interventions, support and referral to Veterans presenting with a wide array of concerns.
• Kenneth Marfilius is a visiting teacher professor at Syracuse University’s Falk College. Prof. Marfilius has a specialization in military mental health, veteran social work, suicide prevention, substance use prevention and treatment and military culture and social work practice. He is also a veteran.
‘CONNECT NY–The First 1,000 Days: From Conception to Pre-K’
June 24 at 9 p.m. on WCNY-TV
A child´s first three years are the most crucial years of their development. With that in mind, New York State created the “First 1,000 Days on Medicaid Initiative” in the summer of 2017. Just about two years into the program, “CONNECT NY” discusses how it’s shaping up with a team of experts in fields including child care, education, child welfare, and public health.
About “CONNECT NY”
“CONNECT NY” offers lively insightful discussion, information and analysis on timely topics that affect residents across the Empire State. The show tackles those public affairs topics significant in the lives of New Yorkers across the state. Viewers will explore personal experiences, important conflicts and tough issues unfolding at the state level through the lens of the stakeholders involved. The show aims to shed light on potential solutions to the complex problems New Yorkers seek to solve through perspectives from those in government, labor and environmental organizations, community leadership, law, and business.
A panel of leaders and experts lend their perspective in a dynamic discussion moderated by Susan Arbetter, WCNY’s director, public affairs and host of WCNY’s statewide daily broadcast radio show “The Capitol Pressroom.”
