This weekend, Principal Pops Conductor Sean O’Loughlin does double duty! Saturday he conducts the orchestra and special guests from Nashville with “Symphoria Loves Country.” And on Sunday, it’s a side-by-side concert when amateur musicians throughout the community join the orchestra on stage. We spoke to Sean, along with Principal Percussionist Michael Bull, about the concerts and the outstanding musicianship of the orchestra. At age 10, Tai Ngo was a Vietnamese “boat person,” who escaped the war in that country as a refugee, and eventually was adopted by the Shaw family in Upstate New York in the early 1980s. decades later, Tai Shaw is a successful Central New York entrepreneur, community activist and leader. The Strathmore Speakers Series and Onondaga Free Library‘s September 2023 event featured celebrated local folk musicians, John and Cathy Cadley and John Dancks. The Cadleys have been entertaining audiences throughout Upstate New York and New England for many years with their powerful mix of traditional bluegrass, “new acoustic” a la Alison Krauss, and numerous original folk composition. Betsy Cusumano suffered an incredible loss when her husband and soulmate since high school, Tom Cusumano, committed suicide in October of 2022, the result of Post-Acute COVID Syndrome. Betsy was devastated, but she turned her pain into purpose and founded the CUS Foundation, which guides those left behind by suicide on their journey to healing.
